The Öresund region had approximately 3 664 000 inhabitants at the turn of the year 2007-08. There are roughly 2 465 000 people livingin the Danish part and 1 199 000 in the Swedish part. The population in the Öresund region is concentrated around Öresund with the majority on the Danish side. The average age is 39 in the Danish part of Öresund region and 40 in the Swedish part. Among the lower age groups, there are somewhat more men, and in the higher age groups there are more women on both sides of Öresund. This is due to more men being born and women living longer.
The age structure in the Swedish and Danish parts of the Öresund region does not vary too greatly from that of their national age structures, but Region Sealand has a clearly different age structure with a higher percentage of children but a lower percentage of young people compared to the Capital Region of Denmark. In total, the two Danish regions have a lower percentage of their population in the ages of 5-20 than Denmark does as a whole, and a higher percentage of ages 25-40. Skåne has a somewhat higher percentage of ages 22-32 than does Sweden as a whole, but a somewhat lower percentage of ages 47-52 and 57-62.
